Disco znana także pod nazwą muzyka dyskotekowa – gatunek muzyki popularnej, głównie, choć nie wyłącznie, przeznaczony do tańca w tzw. dyskotekach. Szczególnie popularny w drugiej połowie lat siedemdziesiątych XX wieku.
Początkowo albumy disco produkowane były wyłącznie dla użytku DJów. Były to zazwyczaj 12 calowe winylowe krążki, najczęściej zawierające ograniczoną liczbę instrumentalnych utworów. Wczesne utwory dyskotekowe były bardzo rytmiczne i właśnie rytm, często generowany elektronicznie był dominującym w tej muzyce. Płyty te były odtwarzane w zmiennym tempie tak, żeby umożliwić wolne lub szybkie tańce. Gdy niektóre dyskotekowe przeboje zaczęto grać w czasie audycji radiowych, wiele z nich zyskało dużą popularność. Skłoniło to niektórych artystów muzyki pop do nagrywania piosenek w stylu zbliżonym do muzyki dyskotekowej. Te grane na dyskotekach, w radio i sprzedawane w postaci nagrań zyskiwały dużą popularność. Wkrótce też, około połowy lat siedemdziesiątych tak zmodyfikowana muzyka disco stała się dominującym stylem w muzyce pop.
